Outwood Grange Academy are now Wakefield Debating Matters Champions! A massive well done to the students that calm confidence and superb skill saw them dominate in the competition on 6th December. They began with a well-researched and keenly argued position on the potential safety benefits of autonomous vehicles after which an audience vote showed an overwhelming majority of support for the judges’ decision – an Outwood victory. In the final round, 2 more students stepped up, defending the value of contact sports. In a passionate debate they were able to get the best of their opponent, showcasing strong knowledge and excellent presentation skills and being named champions. The victory can be attributed to the dedication and talent not only of the four debaters who represented the school on the night but the entire team who played an essential role in preparing for the debate. Special congratulations should also be given to 1 of the students who was, once again, named as the best overall competitor on the evening; this award is issued not only for his brilliant performance in his debate but also in recognition of the intelligent and challenging questions he posed to both his own and other teams during the other debates. The team are now looking forward to the regional finals which will be held next term. Finally, it is important to recognise the hard work of Mr Woods and Miss Salvage in preparing and supporting the team who represent another magnificent example of Outwood Grange’s commitment to developing the cultural capital of our students. Any students who wish to join us are encouraged to come along to L16 at 2.30 on any Wednesday and try it out!
