To develop and support subject study our sixth form provides students with a wealth of opportunities that develop your study skills, broaden your academic thinking and support your academic study.
Subject Lectures / Guest Speakers
A key element of our Post 16 provision is our support for extracurricular activities. We are proud of our ‘Symposium Lectures’ programme - where we invite esteemed academics from a range of disciplines to speak to our students about their work and research. We cover a wide range of topics in our lectures from modern day issues to age-old problems and theories. Students are strongly encouraged to sign up to a range of lectures throughout the year and to take advantage of this excellent provision.
In addition, our guidance programme dedicates two days a week to current affairs and Ted Talks. The idea of these sessions is to broaden students' understanding of the wider world and explore a plethora of issues.
Finally, working closely with our Post 16 subject leads, students are routinely directed towards subject specific lectures and events. Increasingly, these events are streamed online broadening access to all.
Subject and Wider Reading
There are many opportunities available to our sixth form students to extend their study by reading and listening more widely around their subject areas, and on wider issues. We recommend and promote materials through our subject and guidance curriculum to support students to develop their intellectual curiosity and independent learning.
Every subject provides a wider reading list which includes books, articles, podcasts etc that support the development of both subject understanding and subject interest. Our library is an excellent resource and we are happy to support students in accessing additional resources and research.
Post 16 teachers and subject heads will be happy to direct you to wider reading opportunities within your chosen subjects.
Subject Study Support
Students who have studied with us from Year 7-11 will be very familiar with the additional support that is offered by our teaching staff at Outwood Grange Academy. As a Post 16 student, this support does not diminish. All Post 16 students will have the opportunity to access after school catch up sessions - organised by their teachers - or in-school catch up tutorials. All of these are offered as standard across the academy and students would be expected to liaise with their subject teachers to plan their attendance at these. Additionally, students are strongly encouraged to make use of our excellent facilities - e.g. Post 16 computer room or library - where they can study outside of lesson time.
Google Classroom
All students can access online learning materials including recorded lessons and feedback on submitted work through our Google Classroom. This is an excellent learning platform that enables blended learning approaches and collaborative working.
We have fully integrated the use of Google education facilities into our academic provision. All students will be added to subject specific google classrooms - which will be used by their teachers to share lesson resources, extra reading and other resources. Our provision of blended learning is a key element of our Post-16 provision - ensuring students are able to regularly revisit previously learnt content and constantly expand their knowledge. Teachers typically use their subject google classroom as the primary means of communication outside of timetabled lessons and this complements the use of the platform lesson work.
